MancMade Productions: The Story So Far – and What Comes Next

MancMade Productions is an independent Manchester-based production company founded by writer and producer Paul Ludden, developing distinctive, character-driven stories for film and television.

From the outset, the aim has been straightforward: develop original material, bring together talented creative teams and take projects all the way from an initial idea to the screen.

That approach has so far resulted in three independently produced short films — The Visit, Gone Fishing and Being Billy — and helped MancMade Productions build relationships with experienced actors, directors, producers and other creatives along the way.

Each project has represented another step forward in scale and ambition. Now, MancMade Productions is taking that experience into its next chapter: the development of an original slate of feature films and television projects created for UK and international audiences.

The Story So Far

Being Billy

The most ambitious MancMade Productions project to date, Being Billy follows Falklands veteran Billy Livesey, now living with dementia in a care home.

A connection with a new carer begins to break through the fog of  Billy’s condition, triggering memories of a life-changing incident involving Billy, his close friend and fellow Para Stu, and an Argentinian soldier during the closing stages of the Falklands War in 1982.

At its heart, the film is about friendship and connection.  It’s also about trauma, memory and the consequences of war that can continue long after the fighting itself has ended.

The production brought together an established creative team led by Con O’Neill in the title role, with Ian Puleston-Davies directing from a screenplay by Paul Ludden.

Internationally bestselling author Lee Child joined the project as Executive Producer.

Following completion, Being Billy began an international festival journey that has included selections at Aesthetica Film Festival, Bolton International Film Festival, Carmarthen Bay Film Festival and Barcelona Indie Film Festival, bringing awards, nominations and individual recognition for the film and members of its creative team.

Its reception has provided MancMade Productions with another important step towards the larger projects it now intends to make.

The Visit

Written and produced by Paul Ludden and Executive Produced by Lee Child, The Visit is an intimate, character-led short film that became an important part of MancMade Productions development as a production company.

Beyond the finished film itself, the project helped establish creative relationships and demonstrated what could be achieved by putting performance, character and story at the centre of a tightly focused independent production.

Those relationships and that approach would go on to inform the company’s subsequent work.

Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing was MancMade Productions second completed short film and another step in developing a portfolio of entirely self-generated narrative work.

Together, The Visit, Gone Fishing and Being Billy chart the company’s progression — not simply in production scale, but in ambition, creative collaboration and industry reach.

More importantly, they have demonstrated an ability to originate material and see it through: from the first idea and screenplay to casting, production, post-production, festivals and audiences.

The Next Stage

The next stage for MancMade Productions is about applying everything learned through those films to something bigger.

The company is developing a slate of feature film and television projects spanning crime, political thriller, drama and historical storytelling.

The intention is not to build unnecessary infrastructure around them. MancMade Productions will remain deliberately agile and project-driven, bringing together the right writers, directors, actors, producers, financiers and production partners according to the needs of each individual story.

At the centre of that strategy is a growing portfolio of original intellectual property.

The priority now is to take the strongest projects through further script development, packaging, creative attachments and financing towards production.

Scáthanna

Crime Drama / Thriller

Set across Belfast, Manchester and Buncrana, Scáthanna is a story about guilt, legacy and the possibility of redemption.

Terminally ill Tommy McDaid is unexpectedly offered one final opportunity to confront his past when the pregnant daughter of a man he murdered and disappeared thirty years earlier arrives looking for answers.

Her appearance forces Tommy back towards a world — and a history — he thought he had left behind.

At the centre of the story is the developing relationship between two people connected by an act of violence committed decades earlier: one searching for the truth about her father, the other carrying the burden of knowing exactly what happened to him.

Scáthanna explores how the consequences of political violence can pass from one generation to another, combining intimate, emotionally driven drama with the momentum of a contemporary crime thriller.

Somnial

Political / Psychological Thriller

Following the suicide of his veteran wife, Britain’s newly elected Prime Minister discovers the existence of a highly classified military drug capable of suppressing — and potentially eliminating — PTSD.

For the military establishment, Somnial represents something far greater than a medical breakthrough. It is a strategic weapon: a means of keeping elite operators psychologically capable of being sent back into combat repeatedly.

But outside the military, the same drug could potentially transform the lives of millions of people.

Faced with the implications of what he has discovered, the Prime Minister must decide whether to expose the programme while confronting the political, military and commercial forces determined to keep it hidden.

At its heart, Somnial asks a simple question: what happens when a potential cure becomes more valuable as a secret than as a medicine?

Clay

Contained Crime Thriller

A violent interrogation begins with one apparently straightforward question:

Where is the bank?

From there, Clay develops into a tightly contained crime thriller of shifting loyalties, hidden agendas and escalating consequences.

As criminals, intermediaries and an apparently ordinary wife are pulled deeper into events, it becomes increasingly clear that almost nobody involved truly understands what they are fighting to possess — or what “the bank” actually represents.

Designed around a concentrated group of characters and locations, Clay combines the economy of a contained thriller with a larger mystery gradually unfolding beyond the room in which the story begins.

Testament

Period Crime Drama

Against the changing landscape of post-war Europe, a battle-scarred Mancunian former SAS soldier encounters one of the architects of modern organised crime in 1950s London.

One man is attempting to reclaim power.

The other is trying to find a reason to keep living.

Their unlikely friendship becomes the centre of a much larger story spanning London and Sicily, set against the emergence of a new international criminal economy and a world still dealing with the consequences of war.

Testament combines historical crime drama with an intimate study of two very different men whose paths cross at pivotal moments in both of their lives.

Letter of Last Resort

Political / Nuclear Thriller

Few decisions made by a British Prime Minister carry greater consequences than the Letters of Last Resort.

Britain’s ballistic missile submarines carry handwritten instructions from the serving Prime Minister containing orders to be followed if the United Kingdom has suffered a catastrophic nuclear attack and its government has been destroyed.

The contents are secret. Even the Prime Minister’s closest advisers may never know what has been written.

Letter of Last Resort takes that extraordinary real-world responsibility as the foundation for a contemporary political thriller exploring deterrence, leadership and the human consequences of being required to make an almost unimaginable decision.

Coup de Main

Political Thriller

A devastating attack on a high-profile establishment event becomes the catalyst for a much wider confrontation involving political power, institutional loyalty and the British state.

As the consequences of the attack spread, the systems and individuals responsible for protecting power begin turning against one another.

Conceived as a muscular contemporary political thriller, Coup de Main explores what happens when loyalty to an institution and loyalty to the people controlling it cease to mean the same thing.

Building What Comes Next

For MancMade Productions, the next step is not simply about making more.

It is about increasing the scale, ambition and commercial potential of the stories being developed.

That means continuing to strengthen scripts, undertake the necessary research, bring directors and other key creatives into projects, begin casting conversations and develop the budgeting, scheduling, financing and market strategy required to move individual titles towards production.

It also means building relationships with producers, co-production partners, sales agents, distributors, broadcasters and financiers who share the ambition for the material.

The objective is to turn the strongest projects in the slate from compelling screenplays into credible, fully packaged productions.
